Chapter 45: Because we are Idiots

 FIRST TIME HERE? NO PROBLEM – START AT THE BEGINNING – WARNING YOU WILL BECOME ADDICTED TO THE STORY.

“If you have not registered to vote, you have one week to do so and you need to register first before you can vote. My team is outside to assist anyone with questions.”

The crowd stayed quiet.

“Please allow me to give you some voting advice,” she continued. “If you live in Constantia…if you live in Camps Bay…if you live in Bishop’s Court… if you live in any of the most beautiful parts of Cape Town, then please continue to vote for the current political party that is in power.”

The crowd started to murmur, as if to say; “what the hell is she on about?”

 “Do any of you live in those places?” Elaine asked pointedly.

 The murmuring got louder as if to say; “of course not, are you crazy?”

“No, none of you live there, do you? And neither do I, almost all of us were born and raised in the most dysfunctional and ugliest parts of this beautiful Province… were we not?”

The level of murmur sounded a little angry this time.

 “This is YOUR country, mense! And do you know what that means?

“It means that if you were born in a country, any country in the world, you are automatically a citizen of that country and you are naturally entitled to certain rights, like the right to live where you want in that country, the right to have clean water and clean streets, and streetlights that work, and affordable and available electricity, and schools that function properly and community services that protect you, like the police…,” Elaine paused, catching her breath…

“Did the police protect Whitney?”

 “Nooooo.” The crowd roared back. Their anger at the Whitney situation igniting instantly.

 Elaine waited for them to settle down.

“Yes, it’s easy to blame the cops isn’t it…. Its easy to blame apartheid for why we live in these dysfunctional shitholes isn’t it?”

The crowd went silent again. The journalists, one and all, had the distinct feeling that their stories about this event were going to be carried nationally and even internationally, they sensed that Elaine was about to announce something major.

“Is julle slim (are you smart)?” Elaine asked the crowd.

“Jaaaaa,” they roared back.

“Then why, hoekom (why), do you insist on voting people into power who do nothing for you? Why do you vote people into power who make sure of service delivery in places like Camps Bay, but have not done a thing to improve our areas like Delft, Bonteheuwel, Valhalla Park etc…? Why people? Tell me why?” Elaine’s voice was raised and angry now.

“Want ons is dom! (Because, we’re idiots)” sounded a lone voice from the crowd.
