Chapter 47: Buying The Coloured Vote

“One of the moneyboxes in three key areas of the Cape Flats and Platteland contains a mock-cheque worth ten million rand…” The congregation remained quiet because of the word “mock”.

Elaine continued. “Should you be the lucky person to get the moneybox containing that cheque, my party will add another 10 million rand to it, and local business will add another 10 million to that and we will use the combined R30 million to do something meaningful in your immediate community.”

The congregation broke out in applause while the media nodded satisfactorily.

“But,” Elaine continued over the applause.

People went quiet.

“The person who has that lucky money box will immediately get 10 percent of the initial R10 million, to keep for themselves.”

The congregation went ballistic and everyone started jumping up and down hugging each other. The press broke free from the barrier separating them from Elaine and rushed up to her shouting out questions.

The doors of the church opened and the crowd rushed outside towards the stalls.

“Vote for Elaine, vote for the United Coloured Party,” Elaine shouted into the microphone.

Outside, someone had activated the public address system and started playing some feel-good music to keep the vibe going.

Elaine’s assistant ended the call she was on and smiled at Elaine before whispering into her ear. Elaine smiled broader than she had in a long time.

The impact and effect of the campaign was the same everywhere.

And this was only the first day, there were two weeks to go and several church services to be held between now and the election.

Social media exploded with images and video footage of Elaine’s speech, of people opening up their money boxes, of people dancing and wearing the United Coloured Party hats or T-Shirts.

The main stream media online outlets were quick to follow up. As was the expected negative reaction from other parties.

“The United Coloured Party pays for votes,” said an ANC spokesman.  “Unashamed bribery,” said a representative of the Conservative Party. “We call on the government and the police to investigate,” said the DC spokesman.

Elaine was alarmed at the reactions, even though she had expected it. She knew she could not reach out to Johan now as all eyes would be on her. Johan allowed the negative press to simmer through the news cycles for another two days.
