Chapter 51: The Fire Burns Brightly

The fire continued to burn brightly as the second R10m cheque was discovered at a church in the small suburb of Delft. To say that Delft was as bad, if not worse than Lavender Hill, was not at all entirely wrong. Many people here were the generational offspring and decedents of people who were forcibly removed from the better areas of Cape Town and dumped into these Cape Flats hell-holes.

When the local businessman who came out in support of the R10m find by announcing his donation of the matching R10m, turned out to be Malik Sufyan, some eyebrows were raised.

Suddenly members of the press as well as other political parties felt a growing sense of knowing that there was something very organised and controlled going on behind the apparent madness that was unfolding.

Malik’s exploits as a gangster were not hard to trace, even though Shawn’s operation had subdued the reporting of it effectively. Those in the know, began to smell the proverbial rat.  

But what could they do? There was one weekend of campaigning left and tomorrow was Friday, the election will be held on the following Monday.  Was it too late to do anything about it?

It was Wasiela’s idea to involve the extended network of church people connected to the various churches and mosques. These institutions, as a rule, had hundreds of lay-people who interacted with the community on every level and very frequently. Once she had convinced Malik that the best way to execute the plan was to co-opt these lay-people, Malik fed the idea back to Shawn, who was suitably impressed with the idea and shared it with both Stanley and Whitey.

The online trolls were turning up the heat around the awaited discovery of the third cheque. It was only logical, they demised, that the cheque would be discovered on either the Saturday or Sunday before the election began on Monday.

Every able Coloured person on the Cape Flats was attending every church service and lined-up after to receive their money box. The Saturday services as well, were over attended everywhere.

The Muslim community arranged extra prayer evenings to pray for a safe and fair election. This was in-fact to compensate for not having more than one service a week as the Christians did. This too proved massively effective with attendance of these nightly prayer meetings being concluded by the distribution of money boxes.

There was a concern that, due to the greedy and ruthless nature of the gangsters and the communities they controlled, that Elaine would run out of money boxes. But Johan had over 3 million made, and the deal he got from the distributor in China was more than worth it.

He estimated that the eligible Coloured voters numbered a little over 2 million people and since his objective was to get as many of them as possible to vote, he was certain that flooding the market, so to speak, with 3 million money boxes would do the trick.
