Chapter 13: This is How We Do It

…continued from 22 May 2026...
“Imagine, if you will, a mass of people who have been born into a land where they have forever been treated as third-class citizens. Now imagine that suddenly a leader appears, you, a leader who promises to give them real status, real standing in their own land. A leader who backs up her promises by fulfilling them.
A leader who will really fix the schools, the infrastructure, provide the jobs, the housing and most of all, resolving the gangsterism issue. Now continue to imagine that those masses of people suddenly had one moment of inspiration, a sublime incentive which places that dream in the palm of their hands in an instant.”
Now Elaine was truly dumb-founded, she could see from the expression on Johan’s face that he was totally serious, yet she could not fathom how he was going to achieve this impossible dream.
“With the utmost respect Johan, but how in God’s name are you going to pull this off.”
“I have money and I am tired of seeing our people, or people like us, denied their real birthright. I am tired of rich foreigners living in Camps Bay. I am tired of seeing Coloured children begging in the streets, I am tired of white and black elitists making our people feel like they don’t belong in their own land. I have decided to make Cape Dominion my legacy and I have chosen you to be my instrument to achieve it. Will you be part of it?”
Elaine's mind reeled as she heard the words. Was this a mad man? She still could not comprehend how he could guarantee the outcome of the vote.
“I know it must sound absurd,” Johan read her thoughts, “but I assure you it can be done and it will be done. I have all the pieces in place. I cannot disclose the means, because your reputation needs to remain that of an incorruptible politician.
Don’t be alarmed, the money I will donate will be above board and open to scrutiny, I will also make smaller donations, to the other parties as is required for transparency.
These other donations will be made to their Gauteng and KZN offices to ensure that their focus and the money is not used in the Cape battle. There will be no reason to suspect bias or fraud, as in-fact there will be none. I can justify the extra funds for your party by announcing my allegiance to your values, no one will question it, we are, after all both Coloured.”
“I still don’t know how you can guarantee that every Coloured voter will come to the polls and that they will vote for me.” Elaine said, still in awe.
“If I told you that, you would be implicated, and given the nature of politics, it could create powerful enemies for you. It may even lead to the end of your political career. But rest-assured, that will not happen. The mechanisms to mobilise the Coloured masses, and it includes all the rural communities from the Eastern Cape border to the Northern Cape border, will be so far removed from you that it would be almost impossible to contemplate your complicity.”
“But who, how,” Elaine sounded desperate.
“Who are the untouchables on the Cape Flats Ms Pecker,” Johan said matter-of-factually.
“The gangs of course, but…”
