In no time the local media were interviewing the young Muslim woman, as well as a previously unknown local businessman from the area who had pledged to match the R10m, adding it to the R10m Elaine’s party had pledged.

The next 3 days were a whirlwind of organised media chaos. The three recipients of the R10m cheques and their families had become celebrities overnight. They, and their extended families were interviewed on every conceivable platform. Any new angles that were newsworthy, such as any of their extended family members being exceptionally good looking, or smart, or having started a unique business venture, or even having achieved notoriety through petty theft, or a brief stay in prison. Any new or vaguely interesting angle was mercilessly pounced upon by either the mainstream media or Shawn’s online troll circus.
On the third day after the elections, the final voting count had been concluded and the official results were announced.
Tony ignored the ongoing calls to his old phone. He knew exactly who it would be and he had no intention of speaking to any of them, ever again. His new phone was managed by his new personal assistant, an ambitious young woman who had, on several occasions, expressed what could only be described as a ruthless streak, when handling Tony’s ever increasing busy schedule. Especially in the weeks leading up to the elections.
His new phone was abuzz with messages of congratulations and requests for meetings and interviews.

Tony sat alone in his home office. He allowed himself the briefest of smiles, knowing full-well that the fight had only just begun. Winning the election to lead the local municipality was one thing. Registering a new political party, without fanfare, days before the deadline was another thing. Managing a brief and concentrated campaign among his supporters who now had to factor in that he had abandoned the ANC, and convincing them to go with him, was yet another thing.
Only now, at the moment of truth, when the results were announced and his new party, led by himself, had actually narrowly beaten the ANC to take control of the municipality, only now did he believe that he had actually done it.
He realised that his decision to register a new political party and to go up against his former party was fuelled by a deep-seated anger at the fact that he had given his heart, soul, and guts, to the ANC, and he had achieved absolutely nothing worthy of anything close to a legacy he could leave his kids.
