Granny would pack in sandwiches and drinks for them and there was always a delicious treat hidden in her bag. Whitney knew that today was day hospital day, and she was excited about it.
At 09:00 they were out of the door in their finery and off to catch a local taxi to the day hospital. Just after 12:00 they walked back into the house, both granny and Whitney still basking in the aftermath of their outing. Whitney’s face was all gooey with chocolate.
As granny looked through the brown paper bag filled with her prescription medication, she realised that the hospital had not given her any cream for her eczema.
“Darn it,” she said softly under her breath. “I’ll have to go back.”
Then she realised that Whitney was tired and sleepy from the trip and was already nodding off on the chair. What to do, what to do…

“I’ll put her in her bed, and ask Justin just to keep an eye on her while I go back,” she thought.
And this time she would just go to the pharmacy at the Day Hospital and demand the cream, she would not wait in queues. She should be back within the hour.
Johan was overwhelmed with a mixture of impotent rage and despair as he read the article on his phone. Whitney’s body had eventually been found buried in a shallow grave not far from her granny’s house. Some dogs had dug up the body which was dumped into a big black garbage bag before it was hastily buried.
The community was up in arms and their rage knew no bounds. A mob of mothers in the area led the call for better policing and more protection for their children.

There were sporadic and random incidents of arson and looting in the local business centres as young men and fathers gave vent to their anger and disgust at Whitney’s gruesome demise.
She had not only been bludgeoned to death, but the autopsy also revealed that she had been raped and sodomised before being killed.
Jenny was left catatonic by the death of her daughter.

Elaine felt warm tears rolling down her cheeks as she read the same article.
She felt sick to her stomach that this kind of thing was still happening in Coloured communities. She recalled the countless rapes, murders, chilling gang rituals, brutal and sadistic behaviour displayed by the hoards of disaffected and sociopathic youths and young adult males that the inhumane apartheid system and its consequence had produced.
While the roots of this malaise could be traced back to the affects of apartheid and the mass exploitation and stripping away of the dignity of non-white people in South Africa, the time for excuses was over.
Elaine shuddered as if she could feel the icy cold rain outside running over the naked skin of her whole body.
She quickly made the arrangements to visit Jenny. The press was alerted, and descended on Jenny’s house like vultures. When Elaine arrived, the scene at the house was chaos. The local community had gathered outside the front of the house. The police had cordoned off the entrance to the street, but their barricades had been pushed back to a mere 50 metres from the front door.
